New Short Story – Winters Past

Standard

The sun-tanned door creaked against the weight of his body pressed against it. Trayan reveled in the sight of Mar Denan’s nervous sweat popping out from his forehead; Mar’s eyes bulged as Trayan’s hand found purchase around his throat.

“Didn’t want to die in a desert, did you?” Trayan crooned, her voice low and sulfurous. “Didn’t want to die at all, I imagine. Too much trust in your little talent.”

Mar stared into her eyes, gurgling incoherent nonsense through a compressed throat. The summer sun burned down on them, their shadows pooling around their feet on the crackec clay steps. Trayan leaned in, not bothering to mitigate the pressure of her hand. Tessi filled her thoughts, the little girl from a week ago. The girl who was gone, now. Continue reading

Drew’s Wheel of Time Reread – Introduction

Standard

I’m doing a Wheel of Time reread! For those who know me personally, you know how I feel about this series; for those who don’t, WoT is a formative series in my life and is the main reason I became a writer. The depth, complexity, and creativity of the world and story just sucked me in, all those years ago, and ignited the spark of storytelling. Robert Jordan’s crowning work truly opened my eyes to everything the fantasy genre can offer.

This reread will be structured into (hopefully) two or three posts per book. It will likely be one post every week, as I want to take my time reading through it. I’ll be discussing my impressions, both from the first time I read the series, and now, on this umpteenth reread. I’m looking forward to getting a lot of my thoughts down and seeing where WoT takes me this time. Continue reading

The End of NaNo – AFC Update

Standard

Well, November has come and gone. Unfortunately, I didn’t reach my goal of finishing the first draft of All Flames Cast this month; I wrote a touch over 50,000 words out of a projected 90k. It was an eye-opening month, however, and I learned a few important things about both the writing process and the story itself.

The main thing I discovered is that I can’t let myself sacrifice narrative pacing for the sake of word count. NaNoWriMo is a great idea, and works very well for a lot of people; I’m certain it could work for me if I kept to the spirit of the month and didn’t dedicate it to a preexisting project of mine. However, with a book like All Flames Cast, which is the product of years’ worth of worldbuilding, notes, and outlining, using a word count as a goal became a bit of a distraction. I had to constantly stop myself from letting my characters ramble, despite the padded word count it would give me. The pacing of All Flames Cast has been enough of a struggle as it is; slowing it down and letting it wander in order to fill out a word count isn’t the way to go.

However, the end result of all this is that I now have a much better idea of how I want the story to flow, and I overcame a major obstacle in keeping my writing on track. On top of that, of course, I am 50,000 words closer to finishing the first draft. Even though I didn’t hit my goal, I did finish Harael’s chapters, so another chapter will be popping up this week in celebration of that.
