Drew’s Wheel of Time Reread – Introduction

Standard

I’m doing a Wheel of Time reread! For those who know me personally, you know how I feel about this series; for those who don’t, WoT is a formative series in my life and is the main reason I became a writer. The depth, complexity, and creativity of the world and story just sucked me in, all those years ago, and ignited the spark of storytelling. Robert Jordan’s crowning work truly opened my eyes to everything the fantasy genre can offer.

This reread will be structured into (hopefully) two or three posts per book. It will likely be one post every week, as I want to take my time reading through it. I’ll be discussing my impressions, both from the first time I read the series, and now, on this umpteenth reread. I’m looking forward to getting a lot of my thoughts down and seeing where WoT takes me this time.

Before we get started, I do feel obligated to provide a few disclaimers. There will be spoilers in this reread. I’ll be discussing themes that stretch across all of the books, and may reference scenes far ahead of the point in the books each post covers. If you haven’t read the series and don’t want things spoiled, I’d recommend waiting until you finish before reading.

Secondly, I know I’m treading on somewhat sacred ground here. This is not trying to be a copy of the Tor.com reread. Not only am I not Leigh Butler, but I’m going to keep this reread a lot more concise. You won’t have to worry about me writing whole essays for each chapter, or doing just one chapter per week. I won’t be doing full summaries, just some thoughts and observations as I go along. I hope to get this whole reread done in just a couple of months.

The third is more of a guide than a disclaimer. For the sake of ease and brevity, I will be using a lot of acronyms. Basically all of the book titles will be put in this form, and a few other terms that are either a pain to write out or I just habitually use. Some common terms you’ll be seeing:

WoT: Wheel of Time

NS: New Spring, the prequel

TEotW: The Eye of the World

TGH: The Great Hunt

TDR: The Dragon Reborn

TSR: The Shadow Rising

TFoH: The Fires of Heaven

LoC: Lord of Chaos

ACoS: A Crown of Swords

PoD: Path of Daggers

WH: Winter’s Heart

CoT: Crossroads of Twilight

KoD: Knife of Dreams

TGS: The Gathering Storm

ToM: Towers of Midnight

AMoL: A Memory of Light

AoL: Age of Legends

AS: Aes Sedai

TV: Tar Valon

WT: White Tower

BT: Black Tower

DF: Darkfriend

DO: Dark One

LB/TG: Last Battle/Tarmon Gai’don

TAR: Tel’aran’rhiod

Any other terms that pop up over the course of the reread will be explained when they do. I’m looking forward to this quite a lot, and I hope you enjoy the ride!
